  • There is also a Citi AAdvantage Gold Card which carries a $50 annual fee without all these new benefits.

  • Other Facts: This card was offered in Visa Signature, Amex, World MasterCard, and World Elite MasterCard, before Citi started aligning its portfolio with MasterCard in 2015. In Q2 2012, Citi enhanced its Platinum Select / AAdvantage Card by introducing several new benefits including 2x American, airport and on-board benefits, 10% rebate on miles redemption and so on. This finally made this card step up to competitions and that was the reason why we reviewed it for the first time despite that it had been in the market for a very long time. Starting November 2015, foreign transaction fee has been waived. Starting 2017, new applicants will get World Elite MasterCard while many existing cardholders also get converted. In mid 2018, Citi added gas stations and dining as 2x bonus categories and $100 flight discount after $20K annual spending, which made this card a lot more competitive, and increased the annual fee from $95 to $99. In mid 2019, Citi took away the 10% rebate on miles redemption (up to 10K miles per year), while increasing flight discount after $20K from $100 to $125. This is considered devaluation for most cardholders.

The Math
If you take advantage of some of the AA perks such as the $125 discount with $20K spending and free check bags, you are likely to cancel out the $99 annual fee. We currently value AA miles at 1.5 cents per point, so this card returns 3% and 1.5% travel rewards for its 2x categories and general spending, which is not that impressive. However, if you need Loyalty Points (LP) this card becomes much more interesting in that not only does it allow you to accumulate LPs but the rewards return gets much more attractive. For example, if we value LP at 0.5 cent a piece, the card will return 3.5% and 2% for its 2x categories and general spending.

As AA miles can now be transferred from Citi ThankYou points, you might want to check out a premium TY card such as Strata Premier and Strata Elite, both of which returns impressive travel rewards.

The Conclusion
With the 2012 enhancement, Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select Card finally became a card to keep after the 1st year for many flyers. With the 2018 enhancement, this card got better than ever and landed on our Top 10 Best Credit Cards list. With the 2019 protection devaluation, the card fell out of the Top 10. With the 2022 enhancement of Loyalty Point earning, the card has made a comeback to the Top 10 list.
