Wyndham Rewards' big revamp in May 2015 and increased signup bonus for its Visa Signature cards (three free nights at signup + one free night at each anniversary)

5/21/2015

Wyndham Rewards just a revolutionary revamp of its program earlier this month - it used to require 5,500 to 50,000 points per night across its 9 tiers of hotels, but effective May 11, 2015, each hotel will require the same 15,000 points per night.  This is the most interesting change among hotel royalty programs in the recent years, because it is against the normal "add a new category/tier and require more points" type of devaluation we have witnessed.  Obviously it will be a bad deal if you want to redeem points for lower end hotels, but it dramatically increases the value for high end hotel redemptions.  In our book, the value of Wyndham Rewards points actually double, increasing from 0.4 to 0.8 cent per point!  Barclays Wyndham Rewards Visa Signature that returns 2x points for general spending will be equivalent to 1.6% cashback.

What is more exciting is that Barclays and Wyndham have increased signup bonus for both versions of the Visa Signature cards.

  • $69 annual fee version: earn 30,000 points after 1st purchase and an additional 15,000 points after you spend $1,000 within 3 months.  That is an 15K increase in signup bonus (the regular offer has been 30K after 1st purchase).  What is more interesting is that the annual bonus will also be increased from 5,500 points to 15,000 points if you sign up through this offer!
  • Non-fee version: earn 15,000 points after 1st purchase and an additional 15,000 points after spending $1,000 within 3 months.  That is a 18K increase in signup bonus (the regular offer has been 12K after 1st purchase).

We will recommend signing up the $69 version, because you will receive 3 free nights instead of 2 free nights upon signup, and the annual free night (15,000 points) is totally worth the $69 annual fee.

Chase Southwest Airlines RR Visa 50,000 points each (three cards, annual fees apply)

5/19/2015

We blogged about the ongoing 50K offer for Chase Southwest RR Premier personal card earlier this month.  It seems now Chase has again expanded the 50K offers to two other Southwest Visa products: business Premier and personal Plus.  The terms are similar that you will need to spend $2,000 within 3 months on each card to get 50,000 points.  Annual fees apply ($99 for Premier Visa and $69 for Plus Visa).  Like suggested before, it is getting harder, if not impossible to get two personal applications approved on the same day, and you will be better off with one personal and one business applications (for a total of 100K points) if you want to move toward the potentially very lucrative Southwest Companion Pass.

Chase Ink Plus 60,000 points & 1st year free - online application one week left

Chase has had 60,000 points bonus offer for Ink Plus in branch.  Late last month, it made a similar offer online and now we are in the last week of this limited time offer which ends June 25, 2015.  You need to spend $5,000 within 3 months to get the signup bonus and the first year annual fee is waived (saving $95).  Chase Ultimate Rewards points can be redeemed for travel at 1.25 cents per point and the signup bonus could be worth $750.  Ultimate Rewards points can also be transferred to 10 airline/hotel partners' miles/points and your value may be even higher.

Club Carlson further devaluates its royalty program as of June 1, 2015 & the impact on US Bank Club Carlson Visa credit cards

5/14/2015

In April, US Bank announces huge changes to its Club Carlson Premier Visa, which will be effective as of June 1, 2015.  They are taking away the popular and potentially very lucrative "Second Rewards Night Free" feature, and our valuation of the rewards for general spending on this card will drop to 1.75%.

Earlier this month, Club Carlson announced their hotel category adjustment, which will be effective as of June 1, 2015, conveniently coinciding with the date when changes of Club Carlson Visa go into effect.  There are 200+ properties moving up category and 100+ properties moving down.  The number of Category-7 hotels will increase from 11 to 68.  Basically among the high-end properties, approximately 84% of them will be 40-60% more expensive in rewards.  That is really bad news.  Our value for Club Carlson points will be adjusted from 0.35 cent per point to 0.25; Club Carlson Visa will return 1.25% for general spending in our book.  Now you will ask the question whether it is worthwhile to keep the card.  Now the annual 40K bonus when you pay the $75 annual fee will be worth $100 (in our book), and while we do have an opportunity to earn a free night after spending $10,000 a year we are becoming less excited about this product in general.

Mark it - June 1, 2015 is a really bad day for Club Carlson customers and an even worse one for Club Carlson Premier Visa cardholders.  Hurry up and burn your points!

Chase Personal Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Visa 50,000 points ($99 annual fee)

5/1/2015

Chase Southwest Visa has been running 50K signup offers, from time to time, in the past several years.  There are four versions of the card: personal Plus, business Plus, personal Premier, business Premier.  Chase used to make 50K offers for all four cards at the same time, but has been inconsistent recently.  Last round we saw three cards up for 50K.  The current offer is only for the personal Premier Visa and as always the $99 annual fee is NOT waived for the first year.  You will receive 50,000 points after spending $2,000 within 3 months.
