[Original Post 7/26/16] We finally updated the "Protection" page to reflect the major changes Citi brought to its credit cards' travel and consumer protection coverage, effective May 15, 2016. You may want to read our post on the details of the changes here.
As a results of these changes, several Citi cards were moved up on the Top 10 Credit Cards for Protection list. Citi Prestige / Citi AA Executive , previously tied for #2, now replaces JPM Ritz-Carlton Visa as the #1 credit card for protection, due to their already industry leading coverage in almost every categories, expanded travel coverage for family members and traveling companions and for awards tickets, and the newly added two-year extended warranty. Citi ThankYou Premier, Citi AA Platinum, Citi Hilton Reserve, and Citi Expedia+ Voyager are now tied at #4 position, up from #9, due to similar reasons. One of our favorite cards for protection, Amex Platinum fell out of the Top 10 list due to the rearranged ranking.
Citi ThankYou Premier's Signup Bonus
Citi ThankYou Premier's signup bonus was reduced from 40,000 points down to zero in April 2016, shortly after it was ranked as #2 Best Credit Card by us. ThankYou Premier had been constantly offering good signup bonus (40-50K) since its launch several years back, and this sudden disappearance of signup bonus baffled us as well as many of you. It is quite normal for a credit card to change signup bonus from time to time, and that is why when we rank credit cards, we actually look at the pattern during past 12 months so that we don't constantly adjust our ranking. However, we believe this was the first time we have seen anything as drastic. The other interesting thing was that after the 40K offer was pulled from Citi website, there were still a few different working links for 40K floating around for a while, until the end of June when everything was shut down or re-directed to the updated landing page without any bonus. At this point, we are not sure whether (and when) Citi will bring back any bonus for this product. Some say Citi already had sufficient ThankYou Premier cardholders that they don't have to offer a signup bonus, which is certainly possible. However, we still can't rule out the possibility that Citi will bring the bonus back at some point in the future. To deal with this uncertainty, we have decided to come up with a 3-month rule for our ranking: if the bonus doesn't come back after three months of the last known appearance, we will update our ranking to reflect that. For now, ThankYou Premier is still the #2 Best Credit Card on our list and let's wait until the end of September to reevaluate.
